Meet Liz Kettle. She will “Ignite your Creative Spirit!”
Name: Liz Kettle
Age: 49
Profession: Studio artist, teacher and writer

Quilting or Sewing of Choice: I love every task that brings fabric and stitch together, quilting, garments, and home décor. Lately, I have been experimenting with mixed media techniques that I can bring into the traditional quilting world.

First Quilt you ever made: A queen sized cross stitched quilt. I came from an embroidery background and had no idea what I was doing where the quilting was concerned. The quilt had a stamped cross stitch design and also had the quilting lines marked. I thought the ¼” dashed quilting lines where indicators of exactly where I should quilt. I tell everyone that I was doing big stitch quilting way before the rest of the world!

Proudest Quilting Moment: I have a quilt that has been traveling with the Alzheimer’s Forgetting Piece by Piece exhibit to promote awareness for Alzheimer disease. It was made in memory of my Great Uncle who cared for my Great Aunt while the disease destroyed her brain. I often hear from people who have been touched by my quilt. That human connection through my quilting is my proudest quilting achievement.

What are you working on now: I am just beginning a series on native grasses and the western prairie. These pieces are a bit more experimental in nature but fabric and stitch are still the main elements.

“In the last 5 years my work (and stash) has evolved from a focus on fabric to one on thread. I adore thread! I view the stitch as a quilter’s mark on her work. Whether it is machine or hand stitching, thread helps us tell our story and add our unique mark to our work. I have been adding lots of hand stitching for texture lately and I love using Star thread for it as well as machine quilting and machine embroidery. It is awesome when one thread is so versatile."

Shameless Self Promotion: Liz is co-author of the newly released Fabric Embellishing: The Basics and Beyond. Her next adventure, Threads: The Basics and Beyond co-written with Debbie Bates will be debuting in the spring. You can find Liz and her blog at www.TextileEvolution.com
